Spain orders checks on who owns casino payment methods

Dean McHughSource: SBC News

Spain is making payment ownership checks mandatory in online gambling. Royal Decree 813/2026 was published in the BOE on 10 October 2026 and comes into force on 28 October.

New obligations

Operators must check that any card or e-wallet used for deposits and withdrawals belongs to the registered account holder and keep a record of the first check. The rule applies to websites, apps and other interactive channels, and amends the regulations under Law 10/2010 on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing.

In brief
  • Published 10 October; in force 28 October 2026.
  • Existing customers have six months to verify.
  • No withdrawals until verification is complete.
  • Unverified accounts are closed and refunded.

Six-month transition

Existing players can keep depositing and playing for six months, but withdrawals are blocked until they verify their payment method. Accounts that are never verified are closed, with the balance – including withheld winnings – refunded under anti-money laundering rules.

Operators also have six months to update payment and customer identification controls. Remote identification must meet Sepblac's standards, and the DNI identity card is accepted in physical or digital form.

Our advice

Using a payment method in your own name avoids delays. Compare Trustly casinos, Skrill casinos and fastest payout casinos.
